72/96 Hour Kit

Additional items/products to consider:

  • WATER!!! - I have 1 gallon of water in each 96 hour kit (via DATREX water pouches) + the Life Straw Water Bottle & Water purification tablets These chlorine based ones kill more germs than the iodine tablets. (The recommendation for 96 hour kits is really 1 gallon per day per person...however 4 gallons is tough to fit in your kit!) Consider getting some backup Life Straws

  • Water purification drops - 55 Gallon Water Preserver Concentrate 5 Year Emergency Disaster Preparedness, Survival Kits, Emergency Water Storage, Earthquake, Hurricane, Safety One bottle will treat 55 gallons of water. Can use a portion of the drops if you have a smaller container...these are likely the top drops on the market to treat water for storing...lasts for at least 5 years! Product has been tested and used for over 12 years. Use drops these to treat tap water you may be storing.

  • Food Bar - 2400 calories in one bar! Food Bar This is a fantastic way to cram a lot of calories into a small space so you'll have less weight in your pack. I have some in my car too because they last about 5 years even in the car. Mine are in a cooler in the trunk, next to some stainless steel water bottles wrapped in a towel that I keep water in and rotate the water every month or two. (I didn't want plastics leaching from water bottles in hot car or freezing solid in the winter.) They say the packaging on these food bars is not harmful for leaching into food in a hot car for about 5 years, but I have mine in the cooler anyway.

  • Portable shower - Since it’s black it heats up in the sun: 5 gallon shower This is a great basic to have. There are also fancier solar powered portable showers on the market which heat up faster. Also check out this video on How to Wash Your Hair with just 1 Gallon of Water…ladies especially…this is a great way to get the job done…excellent tip they share is to water down your shampoo so that it will rinse out easier…and to focus the shampoo on your scalp rather than your locks ;) (Another great method - use a bucket to catch the water and reuse the bucket water as you wash, and then do a rinse with a new pitcher of fresh water at the end.)

  • Foldable shovel - Great to keep in your car! Foldable shovel

  • Fire/water resistant bag - Video, skip to 1:01 which has the fire and water resistant bag: How to Organize Important Documents at Home (Part 6 of 10 Paper Clutter Series) by Alejandra.tv (she’s one of my favorites!) Fire/water resistant bag

  • Fuel - Awesome portable stove, perfect for 96 hour kit. Fuel Cubes - goes with the stove - they are kind of stinky even in original packaging because they're made with fish oil, I double ziploc bagged them to help a little with the odor. They're great fuel that can be kept safely in the car as well...it’s not combustible fuel like gas. Great fuel to keep in your car 96 hour kit.

  • Radio - American Red Cross FRX3 Hand Crank NOAA AM/FM Weather Alert Radio with Smartphone Charger I read an article comparing different chargers/radios and this one was one of the top rated, plus a very good price.

  • Luggable Loo or 5 gal bucket with toilet seat lid (Get at least 2! One for #1, and one for #2 for your home. Suggest one for your vehicle as well.) Luggable Loo from Amazon. Luggable Loo from Cabela’s.

    • Line with a black garbage bag (or two! to help prevent leaks!) Pro-tip: Can wear a black garbage bag like a big poncho, just cut a hole in the top and wear it, use it to cover yourself up while using the loo. Nice option especially if no privacy otherwise.

    • OOOPS Vomit and Smelly Liquid Absorbent and Deodorizer Non-toxic, used in schools and airplanes, helps to prevent staining of carpets and fabrics. Works great as an absorption powder for fluids such as urine: just sprinkle some in the loo and it helps make a gel and deodorize, makes more manageable and less likely to leak. Fantastic product to add to your nursery to absorb spills/fluids as well!

    • OXO makes a great foldable portable potty for kids too, which comes with disposable liners that you fold up and throw away as you would a diaper.

  • Cooking Stove - Lightweight stainless steel pot for cooking over mini stove I really did my research on this one, comparing all sorts of stoves/cups etc. The stainless steel weighs slightly more than aluminum but cooks more evenly. It has a lid which is important because it cuts down on cooking time significantly which is important for saving fuel. The handles fold in for less space when packing. The pouring spout is a fantastic feature too, plus has measuring markings right on the pot.
